Outstanding Achievement Award

At the time John B. Holstead retired from the law firm of Vinson & Elkins of Houston, Texas, a scholarship was created at Ruston High School honoring John for his many outstanding years with the firm. This scholarship is known as the Outstanding Achievement Award.

The nominees for the scholarship are graduating seniors (usually three or four) who are selected by the faculty at RHS using certain agreed upon criteria. The names and résumé's of the nominees are submitted by Ruston High School to the Scholarship Committee of the RHS Alumni Association. This committee considers the nominees and selects the recipient from that group. The recipient from the preceding year presents the Outstanding Achievement Award to the selected student each year during commencement. The recipient of the award receives an unrestricted $1,500 scholarship, and his or her name is inscribed on a plaque that hangs in the entry hall at RHS. One of the objectives of the award is to encourage a recent, outstanding graduate who is attending college to return to RHS each year and serve as an example to the students

Vinson & Elkins law firm provided the initial funds for the award, and a gift from John B. Holstead graciously matched it. It is the desire of the Alumni Association to keep this scholarship in place long after the existing funds have been exhausted through donations from other alumni interested in Ruston High School. and increasing the annual amount in due time.
